This episode is titled Starting a Hair Business 101
In this episode, you’ll get the basics of getting started with your hair brand, and how to keep going once your brand is started
You don’t need a sale in the first week or even the first two weeks
Sure, a lot of people buy hair, but you won’t start selling overnight
If you want to be successful, you can’t just rely on your friends and family
Mikey started his first online store in January 2006
He spent WEEKS working on this website
And when he went live, it was just crickets…his first sale was his grandmother
It took 3 weeks for Mikey to make his first non-family sale, and the sale was only $20
When you start in this business, remember that ͞a sale is a sale͟.
Entrepreneurship is emotional, so you have to be ready for the emotional rollercoaster.
Don’t freak out, it’s a part of the business and a part of growth
One of the first things you want to do is make sure your domain name is available, as are the social media handles.
THEN figure out what platform you’ll put your website on
Mikey and Zakira are HUGE fans of WordPress
Shopify is a great platform to use, but be careful because they don’t accept payments for hair extensions.
Shopify’s credit card processor is just a white-labeled version of Stripe.
That means you’ll need to work with a 3rd party payment processor.
Which means you’ll need to eat an extra 1% on every transaction.
Proprietary platforms are a disaster—they’re completely customizable but they come at a huge expense
A lot of people don’t realize that YouTube is the #2 search engine next to Google, so it needs to be a part of your hair brand marketing platform
Zakiyrah and Mikey are developing an education platform for people to use
Start a Hair Extension Business – the Facebook Group.
Private Label Extensions is the wholesale side of the business.
This is for BULK purchasing.
Also for stylist and salon owners who want to stock their shelves with extensions
Dropship BundlesoGreat for people who don’t want to have all the photos, pricing sets, and inventory on-hand
This is a great starting point for your hair brand, but it’s not an endpoint
The biggest struggle after getting your brand going is MARKETING
Marketing is EVERYTHING
Most websites convert anywhere from 1% to 3% of visitors—that’s it.
So, when your site is new, 99 out of every 100 visitors to your site aren’t buying anything
Episode 2 will talk about marketing at-length
When it comes to social media, focus on the platforms you know and are comfortable FIRST
Let’s talk about blogging
It’s hard to push out a blog every single day, so aim for once a week
Having said that, there are MILLIONS of blogs published every day
Google will find and rank ONLY the top articles on the subject
So, if you’re going to write an article about hair, it needs to be the most detailed article you can write
It will take six months at a minimum to see results from your content marketing
A lot of people don’t realize how important email is—sure Facebook and Instagram are hot now, but how hot will they be in 5 years?oFacebook is already trending down in usage amongst youths
Plan NOW for what people will be doing LATER
Crazy growth is tied too
And education—teach your clients and customers how to be awesome
Episode 2 will talk in-depth about hair extension marketing so make sure you tune in next week a
